Paulo Coelho is a celebrated Brazilian author whose life itself is a story of perseverance. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he dreamed of becoming a writer from a young age despite his parents objections. The story follows Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who dreams of finding treasure near the Egyptian Pyramids. As Santiago sells his flock and travels to Africa, he encounters setback after setback, including being robbed in Tangier. Every trial prepares you with the wisdom needed to handle the treasure when you finally reach it.
In the desert oasis, Santiago meets the Alchemist, who guides him toward the Pyramids. The Alchemist teaches that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself, and no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams. Everything on Earth is connected through the Soul of the World, and listening to your heart connects you to this universal energy.
When Santiago finally reaches the Pyramids and digs for the treasure, he is attacked by refugees who laugh at his dream. One of them mentions a dream of a treasure hidden in Spain under a sycamore tree where Santiago used to sleep with his sheep. Santiago returns home and finds the treasure right where he started, realizing that the real treasure was the wisdom, love, and growth gained along the journey.
